Dr. Shahnaz Begum is a distinguished ophthalmologist and currently serves as the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Glaucoma Society (BGS). She completed her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Mymensingh Girls’ Cadet College and obtained her MBBS degree in 2001 from Sir Salimullah Medical College.

She received her postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIOH). She obtained the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) qualification in 2007 and subsequently completed her Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) in Ophthalmology in 2010.

Dr. Shahnaz completed a long-term fellowship in glaucoma at Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute & Hospital and further advanced her expertise through a short-term fellowship at the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, India. She is a glaucoma consultant and a skilled cataract (phacoemulsification) surgeon, and is affiliated with the Bangladesh Eye Hospital & Institute, Dhanmondi.

With extensive experience in the laser and surgical management of glaucoma, as well as significant expertise in cataract surgery, Dr. Shahnaz Begum has made notable contributions to the field. She has authored 26 publications in both national and international peer-reviewed journals.

Her accolades include the prestigious Mubarak Ali Memorial Award (2017 & 2025) and the Fazlul Haque Memorial Award (2023) for the best glaucoma paper, conferred by the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB). She has also received first prize in the BGS Spotlight Video Competition in 2021, 2024, and 2025.

Dr. Shahnaz regularly participates in national and international conferences and is a life member of the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB), Bangladesh Glaucoma Society (BGS), Bangladesh Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (BSCRS), and the All-India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS).
